Discovered this on the show ‘Love Bites’ today and it’s simply a real happy, summer song that is very catchy.

Racing Like A Pro - The National

The National - Racing Like A Pro

One of the best songs the National has made in my opinion. Although overall a very, very solid band with great songs, this one always gets me. There is a lot of emotion in this song and you can feel it when you listen to it. You don’t even have to completely follow the meaning of the lyrics to have it applied to a situation in your life.

All rights to this song belong to the band and the music company, I do not own the rights to this song.

Lower Manhattan Skyline Blurry Manhattan Michel The obligatory NYC Picture

So here are some of the pictures I took in New York over the holiday vacation. I’ll put some more up later if I can find some other good ones.

Fun story, during news at Times Square we had a couple of Germans standing next to us waiting for the New Years and seeing as we had 5 hours till New Years we decided to brush up on the German we had gotten in High School and try to have a conversation with them. Naturally our German was just horrible, although we could all follow what they were saying, speaking it ourselves only ended in hilarious moments with us messing up big time. I’m just glad they didn’t understand Dutch… but in the end we had a hilarious time and they were really cool. A bit of a shame I never asked them for their facebook (if they have it), but what ya gonna do?

I saw Niall Connolly at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York on December 26th of 2010 (it’s 2011 already, strange… Happy New Years too!) and I shot this video of what I personally think is one of his best songs “The Boys are in the Kitchen Sink”. The performance was great and he is a funny lad. So check his stuff out at www.niallconnolly.com. Enjoy the video and enjoy 2011!

Wax and Wire - Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond - Wax and Wire

Wax and Wire from Loch Lomond is one of the better songs I’ve heard lately. It reminds me a lot of Julia and Angus Stone. It’s a bit of a folksy pop song and it’s variation from whispering to bellowing is very well done. Comes close to some older The Decemberists records, such as Picaresque. Overall a very upbeat song that’s simply really good. Although the band is from Portland, I got a bit of a Scottish feeling with this song as well (maybe it’s because of the band name, who knows)

The song comes from the EP Night Bats, only 5 songs long, but each song is a strong piece of work, but even if it wasn’t Wax and Wire is good enough to warrant buying this EP anyway, at least for me.

Inspiration

Often when I watch a film, read a book or listen to music that is moving, that burrows down into my very core and moves the foundations upon which I’m build, I feel inspired to write something. Something that moves people the way I was just moved, something that makes people stop what they are doing to read what was just written. Whether it be a song, a poem or a book, it’s always up there, floating around in my head. But no sooner do I sit down to put pen to paper or fingers to keys and it slips away, hiding behind the neurons and synaptic connections. My inner child chases it around, like a game of tag. It searches for it, like a game of hide and seek. But inspiration doesn’t wish to be found, it knocks on your frontal lobe, getting you to spring to action and once a jump has been made it rushes back to the occipital lobe, forever keeping you running in circles, wondering what to write, what to say, what to do.

Comptine d'Un Autre Ete l'Apres MIDI - Yann Tiersen

Yann Tiersen - Comptine d'Un Autre Ete l'Apres MIDI

There are not a lot of sound tracks of films that I think make excellent albums on their own (I’m talking about soundtracks purely created for the film, Vanilla Sky for instance has a great soundtrack, but that’s a collection of various artists). A few examples of really good soundtracks, in my opinion, are: Emilie Simon - La Marche de l’Empereur (The March of the Penguins), Howard Shore - Lord of the Rings trilogy, Eddie Vedder - Into the Wild and of course Jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds (original). The soundtrack to the film Amelie from Yann Tiersen is one of these wonderful soundtracks, that fit in beautifully with the film but form an excellent album outside of the film as well. This song is without a doubt my favourite of this album, I can listen to it on repeat for ages.

It does have to fall within your taste limit, as it’s quite different music from the artists I’ve previously posted on this blog, but my taste is very wide when it comes to music and I certainly enjoy the classical kind too (although this is more a combination between classical music and what one would perhaps describe as soft pop). Yann Tiersen writes whimsical, melancholy music that is hard to put in a box, but is wonderful to listen to.

Wonderful Life - Hurts

Hurts - Wonderful Life

I don’t know how late I’m to the party with this. But the Hurts début album, titled Happiness, is a fantastic album. It has some hints of the 80s music fused with newer sounds. The album has grabbed me from the start. Hurts is a British synthpop duo, first appearing in the news in 2009, with Happiness being their début in 2010. Some of my favourites on this album are Stay, Unspoken and this one, Wonderful Life. Although the album overall is very solid and there is only one song on it that I could do without, which is the last song Water, although not a bad song it doesn’t hit home for me. But overall, I would definitely recommend this.
